Mahua Moitra Alleges Attack and Siege During Party Meeting in Kaliganj
Claiming that protesters laid siege to the venue, Moitra said she and other TMC workers remained confined inside the party office for nearly four hours.
She further alleged that the attack was carried out by BJP workers and not by ordinary members of the public.
Over the last few weeks, several TMC leaders have alleged that they were attacked and pelted with eggs while they were under police watch.
"You cannot dehumanise a person", and one or two arrests would not solve the larger problem of political violence, the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday had observed while directing the state government to file a comprehensive report on the steps taken to prevent attacks, including egg pelting, on TMC leaders and workers.
The fresh incident took place on Wednesday while Moitra was attending a meeting at the local MLA's office in her constituency.
According to the MP, a crowd gathered outside carrying black flags and raised slogans against her.
She alleged that eggs, stones and mud were thrown through the window of the office from the road outside, and that one of the eggs hit her saree.
Taking to her social media platform X, Moitra wrote that she was "under attack" and accused BJP workers of being behind the incident, while alleging that West Bengal Police personnel remained present but did not intervene.
She also shared videos purportedly from the spot.
In another video message addressed to West Bengal DGP Siddh Nath Gupta, Moitra alleged that she and party workers remained confined inside the office for nearly four hours as protesters surrounded the premises.
She claimed she informed the DGP and shared the location, but alleged that although police personnel reached the spot, they did not disperse the crowd and instead "stood and watched" as the attack continued.
Declaring she would not be intimidated, Moitra said: "I will stand. And this flag will stand. Till death. No BJP vermin will succeed in silencing me."
Reacting to the incident, Abhishek Banerjee shared the High Court's observations and condemned the alleged attack.
Questioning the response of the police despite the court's recent directions, he said: "The silence of the WB Police raises serious questions. When an elected representative is heckled simply because she refuses to bend, it is not an expression of strength. It is an admission of insecurity and cowardice."
He also warned that political power was not permanent and "acts of intimidation would be remembered".
Meanwhile, responding to the incident, Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya reportedly dismissed the allegations and claimed the episode reflected infighting within the Trinamool Congress.
Speaking to reporters, he reportedly said: "This egg-throwing must stop, and the TMC leader who is sitting hidden at home needs to step out into the field. TMC is attacking TMC."
Taking a dig at the allegations that the police failed to act, Bhattacharya reportedly remarked: "How can the police identify those who have eggs in their pockets? There is no machine to detect this. Metal detectors don't detect eggs, so let us bring in a new machine."
The alleged attack on Moitra comes amid a series of similar allegations involving TMC leaders in recent weeks, beginning with Abhishek Banerjee, who alleged that he was attacked with stones and eggs during a visit to Sonarpur on May 30.
Eggs were also allegedly thrown at the husband of former TMC MLA Nilabati Saha in Sainthia, while in Tarakeswar's Talpur area, TMC leader and Panchayat Samiti member Rahul Biswas alleged that BJP workers assaulted him, pelted him with eggs, garlanded him with shoes and paraded him publicly in a semi-clothed condition.
