Forum renews demand for separate Siliguri district

MP, July 18, 2026, Siliguri : The Brihattara Siliguri Nagarik Manch, an organisation comprising eminent personalities of Siliguri, has raised the demand for declaring Siliguri city as a district and establishing a Metropolitan Magistrate Court here.

On Friday, the organisation announced that it will organise a large citizens' convention on July 20 to press for these long-pending demands.

Addressing a press conference at the Siliguri Journalists' Club, Ratan Banik, general secretary of the organisation, said: "Siliguri's growing importance as the commercial and administrative hub of North Bengal warrants a stronger administrative framework.

Despite the city's rapid expansion, the existing administrative structure has failed to keep pace. Creating a separate district would ensure faster delivery of government services and reduce administrative delays."

The organisation has proposed that the new district should comprise the Siliguri subdivision along with Binnaguri Mouza of Dabgram-Fulbari, Bhaktinagar Police Station and New Jalpaiguri Police Station areas.

The convention will be held on July 20 at 4 p.m. at Ramkinkar Hall in Siliguri.

The organisation has invited representatives from social organisations, legal professionals, business communities, eminent citizens and the general public to participate.

Resolutions adopted at the convention will be forwarded to the Chief Minister, North Bengal Development Minister, MLAs and other concerned authorities.
