Dharmendra Pradhan Steps Down as Education Minister Amid NEET-UG Fallout

In a high-stakes move to defuse weeks of student protests at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, the Union Minister bows out, taking moral accountability for the examination crisis.

KalimNews, New Delhi, July 25, 2026 : In a dramatic political turn of events, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan tendered his resignation from the Union Cabinet on Saturday. The decision comes as a direct response to weeks of mounting pressure and sustained demonstrations by thousands of students and youth organizations camping at New Delhi's Jantar Mantar.

Posting his official resignation letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on X (formerly Twitter), Pradhan emphasized that his departure was guided purely by the need to safeguard the interests of India’s youth and prevent ongoing political polarization from jeopardizing their academic futures.

"The situation that has arisen at Jantar Mantar and across the nation must not be exploited by anti-national forces. The unity of the country must be maintained, and the future of even a single student should not be entangled in legal complications. Our youth belong in classrooms, focusing on building their careers. Keeping this in mind, I have submitted my resignation," Pradhan wrote.

Taking Moral Accountability

The controversy stems from widespread alleged paper leaks and technical irregularities during the NEET-UG examination held on May 3. Following public outcry and initial probe findings, the Ministry of Education swiftly cancelled the initial test, handed over the criminal investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and scheduled a fresh nationwide examination.

Pradhan noted that throughout the turbulent period, his administration’s priority was executing a fair and secure re-examination for over 2 million medical aspirants:

Swift Re-examination: Supported by state governments and district administrations, the rescheduled NEET-UG was successfully conducted on June 21, 2026.

Results & Merit: The updated results, declared on July 16, 2026, saw strong performances across socioeconomic backgrounds.

Structural Reforms: To prevent future paper leaks, the Centre announced a permanent transition to a Computer-Based Test (CBT) format for NEET-UG starting in 2027.

Despite these remedial measures, student agitation persisted at Jantar Mantar, recently gaining significant momentum after over 100 prominent literary figures—including Banu Mushtaq and Ashok Vajpeyi—signed a public pledge of solidarity supporting the demonstrators.

Addressing the turmoil of the past ten days, Pradhan insisted the move was never about personal pride. "This is not a matter of personal prestige for me. The youth power of India is the real strength of this country. I will not let the youth get trapped in a vicious cycle of confusion," he added, thanking his colleagues in the Union Cabinet and ministry staff for their support during his tenure.
