TI, June 16, 2026, Kolkata: The first full-fledged budget of the government headed by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari will be presented in the West Bengal Assembly on June 22.

The schedule for the upcoming budget session was finalised on Tuesday following meetings chaired by Speaker Rathindra Basu.

After the customary all-party meeting and a Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting, it was announced that the budget session will commence on June 18 with the Governor’s address to the House, setting the stage for what is expected to be the first major policy exercise of the new government.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Shankar Ghosh and Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Umesh Rai announced the session schedule following the meetings.

Governor R. N. Ravi is scheduled to deliver the customary inaugural address at 11 am on June 18. The authenticated copy of the address will subsequently be laid before the House by the Speaker, after which a motion of thanks will be moved by a senior member of the treasury benches and seconded by another ruling party legislator.

On June 19, the Assembly will meet at 11 am for obituary references to eminent personalities who have passed away recently.

However, political and administrative attention remains firmly focused on June 22, when Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta will present the Annual Financial Statement for the 2026-27 fiscal at noon.

As the first budget of the Adhikari-led government, the document is expected to offer a clear indication of the administration’s economic priorities and governance roadmap for the next five years.

Government sources indicated that sectors such as industrial growth, employment generation, infrastructure expansion, agriculture and fiscal revival are likely to feature prominently in the budget proposals.

Political observers believe the budget will also serve as a test of the government’s ability to translate its electoral mandate into a coherent economic agenda amid heightened public expectations.

The Assembly will take up discussion on the Governor’s address, public importance matters and the general budget on June 23 and June 24.

The debate is expected to witness sharp exchanges between the treasury and opposition benches, with both sides seeking to shape the political narrative around the state’s economic direction.

On June 25, discussion on the budget will continue alongside consideration of demands for grants from various government departments.

The House will then adjourn for a brief recess before reconvening on July 6 at 11 am for the second phase of the session.

The upcoming budget session assumes added significance as it marks the first comprehensive financial statement of the new administration and is expected to provide early signals on the government’s development strategy, welfare priorities and investment outlook.

For the opposition, it will offer the first major platform to scrutinise the government’s promises and policies.
