Pre-Monsoon Showers: Yellow Alert Issued Across West Bengal
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city’s sky will remain partly cloudy over the next week, with chances of localised thunderstorms and light rain in some areas. However, temperatures are expected to remain above normal.
The maximum temperature in Kolkata is likely to hover around 37°C, about 1.2 degrees above normal, while the minimum temperature may stay close to 29.8°C, nearly 2 degrees above seasonal averages.
High humidity levels, ranging between 49 and 86 per cent, are expected to make conditions increasingly uncomfortable despite occasional showers.
Meanwhile, the IMD has issued a Yellow Alert for all districts of North and South Bengal until Wednesday.
The southwest monsoon has already entered Kerala and is expected to advance further into Goa, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, the northeast Bay of Bengal and northeastern states within the next two to three days.
Several districts of South Bengal may experience thunderstorms accompanied by rain throughout the week.
In North Bengal, weather conditions are expected to be more intense, with forecasts of heavy rainfall ranging between 7 and 11 cm in all districts. Gusty winds of 40–50 kmph and the possibility of lightning strikes in open areas have also been predicted.
One person was injured after a tree uprooted by strong winds fell on a parked car in AE Block, Salt Lake, as a pre-monsoon thunderstorm lashed Kolkata and adjoining districts on Friday morning.
