New Jalpaiguri set to emerge as major railway hub, says MP

MP, June 9, 2026, Siliguri: New Jalpaiguri (NJP) Railway Station is transforming into one of India’s most important railway hubs, with large-scale redevelopment work progressing rapidly.

The station is being upgraded into a world-class transport facility, said Jayanta Kumar Roy, Member of Parliament (MP) from Jalpaiguri, after inspecting the ongoing redevelopment work at the station.

During his visit, he reviewed the progress of various infrastructure projects being undertaken as part of the station’s transformation.

“NJP is poised to play a pivotal role in the future of Indian Railways. Several important trains, including long-distance services, will originate from this station in the coming years,” he said.

The MP also stated that the station is expected to incorporate underground rail connectivity in the future, further enhancing its status as a key transportation hub in eastern India.

According to Roy, the redevelopment project is being carried out with a vision to accommodate future high-speed rail services.

He said that bullet train connectivity through the region is being planned, which could significantly reduce travel time between Siliguri and Delhi, making long-distance travel faster and more convenient.

As part of the redevelopment project, special ticket booking counters are being constructed on both the northern and southern sides of the station.

The MP informed that work on these facilities is progressing rapidly and is expected to be completed within the next one-and-a-half years.

The new ticket booking counter on the southern side is expected to benefit a large number of passengers from Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, Alipurduar and other parts of the Dooars region.

Once operational, passengers from these districts will no longer need to take longer routes through the city to access railway booking facilities.

Dr Roy further stated that the existing double railway line between NJP and Aluabari Road is planned to be expanded into a four-line track in the future.

He also announced that a separate office of the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) will be established at NJP.

He added that a significant portion of the redevelopment work has already been completed.
