Kolkata Civic Administration Prepares for Chief Minister's Visit Following KMC Changes
Officials said preparations were in full swing at the civic headquarters, with senior officers directed to remain updated on the status of various departments amid indications that the chief minister may review the city's preparedness ahead of the monsoon season.
According to sources in the state administration, Adhikari is expected to participate in the launch of a cleanliness drive linked to the Centre's Swachh Bharat initiative ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's proposed visit to the state on June 20 for West Bengal Day celebrations.
While the programme is officially focused on sanitation and urban cleanliness, the visit assumes significance as it comes at a time when Kolkata's civic administration is undergoing one of its biggest transitions in over a decade.
Officials said Adhikari may also interact with KMC administrator Smita Pandey and senior civic officials during the visit. The chief minister is expected to seek updates on drainage infrastructure, waterlogging mitigation measures, waste management systems and other civic services as Kolkata prepares for the peak monsoon period.
The prospect of the chief minister's visit has prompted heightened activity within the corporation.
Officials across departments have reportedly been instructed to remain available and briefed on the latest status of projects and civic services, while special arrangements have been made at the headquarters ahead of the programme.
A senior civic official said all departments had been asked to be prepared in case the chief minister sought a detailed review of the city's administrative and civic preparedness.
Although Adhikari had earlier visited a KMC borough office in Alipore after assuming office as chief minister, Monday's programme will mark his first visit to the corporation's iconic headquarters since the dramatic political changes that followed the assembly elections.
The political backdrop has changed significantly since then.
