Kalimpong Administrative Review Meeting Focuses on Infrastructure, Welfare, and Connectivity
KalimNews, June 13, 2026, Kalimpong : Darjeeling Member of Parliament Raju Bista chaired a high-level administrative review meeting in Kalimpong, where senior district officials deliberated on a wide range of development, infrastructure, and public welfare issues concerning the hill region.
The meeting placed strong emphasis on disaster management preparedness, water supply challenges, civic infrastructure development, and the progress of ongoing projects across Kalimpong district. Detailed discussions were held on the functioning of the Kalimpong Municipality, including the implementation of AMRUT urban development projects, solid waste management systems, sewerage infrastructure, and related civic works.
Traffic congestion and parking management within Kalimpong town were also reviewed, along with the performance of key departments such as the Public Works Department (PWD) and the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department.
Officials assessed the progress of repair and expansion works on National Highway-10 and also discussed the feasibility of developing an alternative route to improve regional connectivity and ease transportation pressure in the hills.
The meeting further reviewed housing construction for families affected by floods and landslides, as announced by the state government. Healthcare infrastructure, along with the need to strengthen medical facilities at the primary, block, and district levels, was also discussed in detail.
Proposals for establishing additional fire stations in Gorubathan, Algarah, and Jholung were examined to enhance emergency response capacity in remote areas.
Education-related infrastructure also featured in the discussions, including the progress of the Eklavya Model Residential School and efforts to bring it under the CBSE system. Bista noted that the school building is expected to be completed by January 2027.
The meeting also reviewed the implementation of the Annapurna Yojana, along with cases related to the alleged removal and restoration of beneficiaries under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.
Other key issues included starting of an agricultural college in Pedong, challenges related to cinchona plantations and measures to address drug abuse and trafficking networks operating in the hills.
The meeting was attended by the District Magistrate, Superintendent of Police, Secretary of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA), senior officials from NDRF, NHIDCL, Health Department, PWD, PHE, Neora Division, and officers of the 27 Mountain Division of the Indian Army.
Speaking after the meeting, Bista stated that the central government remains committed to strengthening rural infrastructure and improving connectivity in the Darjeeling Hills, Terai, and Dooars region.
Speaking after the meeting, Bista reiterated that infrastructure development and rural connectivity remain top priorities for the region.
In Kalimpong district alone, approximately 80.194 km of rural roads have been approved, covering multiple rural blocks including Gorubathan, Lava, Pedong, and Kalimpong-I. Additional road projects covering more than 62 km have also been sanctioned across Darjeeling district, including Darjeeling-Pulbazar, Jorebunglow-Sukhia Pokhari, Kurseong, Mirik, and Rangli Rangliot blocks.
These projects, he said, are aimed at improving rural connectivity, expanding access to essential services, and boosting economic opportunities in remote hill areas.
