Governor Accepts Anit Thapa's Resignation as GTA Chief Executive

Amitava Banerjee, MP, June 25, 2026, Darjeeling : The Governor of West Bengal has accepted the resignation of Anit Thapa from the post of Chief Executive of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) with immediate effect.

According to an official communication issued by the Governor's Secretariat, West Bengal, on June 24, the resignation submitted by Thapa through his letter dated June 17 has been accepted by the Hon'ble Governor.

The letter, signed by Dr Saumitra Mohan, Secretary to the Governor of West Bengal, stated that the resignation from the office of the Chief Executive, GTA, has been accepted with immediate effect.

Copies of the communication have been forwarded to the Principal Secretary, Home and Hill Affairs Department, Nabanna, and the Principal Secretary of the GTA for necessary action.

Reacting to the development, Anit Thapa stated that he had chosen the community over his chair.

“I chose the community, not the chair. Many of you had doubts and questions regarding my resignation. But Anit Thapa always keeps his words,” he said.

Thapa stated that he had tendered his resignation on June 17, 2026.

“From today, I am completely relieved of the responsibilities of the Chief Executive of the GTA. My freedom from this responsibility will now be used for fulfilling our community's aspiration,” he added.

Calling for unity among Gorkhas, Thapa appealed to people to bring different voices together.

“Let us unite the various voices of all Gorkhas into one voice. If the community survives, the party survives. I appeal to everyone to unite for the emancipation of the community,” he said.

The acceptance of Thapa's resignation comes amid ongoing political discussions in the Darjeeling Hills regarding the future of the GTA and the demand for a permanent political solution for the Gorkha community.

Meanwhile, Bharatiya Gorkha Yuva Shakti (BGYS), the youth wing of the Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha, has called a major youth convention in Kurseong on July 5 to discuss the prevailing political situation in the Hills.

The organisation stated that the present circumstances offer an opportunity to advance the long-pending political aspirations of the Gorkha community.

Referring to Anit Thapa's resignation as GTA Chief Executive, BGYS leaders said the move was aimed at ensuring that the GTA did not become an obstacle in the pursuit of the community's political aspirations.

The convention is expected to draw participants from Darjeeling, Kurseong, Mirik and Kalimpong.

In another development, BJP youth leader Sandeep Pradhan of Kurseong resigned from the party, stating that he was unable to answer public questions regarding the continuation of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) and the demand for a Permanent Political Solution (PPS).

Questioning the allocation of Rs 360 crore to the GTA in the West Bengal budget, Pradhan said people had voted for the BJP to end the GTA and for a permanent political solution for the Hills.

“The aspiration of the Gorkhas is separation from Bengal. No other arrangement is acceptable to us,” he stated.

Pradhan said residents were asking why the GTA would continue even after the resignation of GTA Chief Anit Thapa and what form the promised PPS would take.

Claiming that he could not provide satisfactory answers to the public, he announced his resignation from the party.
