ED Conducts Searches at Properties Linked to Madan Mitra in Municipal Recruitment Probe

MP, June 14, 2026, Kolkata: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday conducted searches at multiple premises linked to TMC MLA and former minister Madan Mitra as part of its money laundering probe linked to the alleged municipal recruitment scam.

The searches were carried out at Mitra’s Bhawanipur residence, flats in Dakshineswar and Joka, a property in Beleghata and the premises of two local clubs in Bhawanipur and Santoshpur.

Multiple ED teams launched simultaneous operations early in the morning and questioned Mitra at his Bhawanipur residence during the searches.

According to ED sources, investigators are examining allegations that Mitra was linked to more than 125 irregular appointments in municipalities, including Kamarhati and Titagarh.

The agency alleged that bribes were collected in cash and gold through a network of intermediaries in exchange for appointments and that ineligible candidates were recruited to various municipal posts.

Sources said investigators recovered cash and documents during searches at Mitra’s Dakshineswar flat and identified six bank accounts whose transactions are being scrutinised.

Officials are probing alleged irregularities in municipal recruitment and examining the role of intermediaries and beneficiaries linked to the appointments under scrutiny.

The searches stem from leads obtained during the investigation into businessman Ayan Sil, who was arrested in March 2023.

During the school recruitment scam probe, central agencies recovered recruitment-related documents, candidate lists and hundreds of OMR sheets from premises linked to Sil and his company, ABS Infozone Pvt Ltd.

Investigators alleged the material contained records relating to recruitments in dozens of municipalities, including Kamarhati Municipality, bringing Mitra under the scanner of the probe.
