Delhi Police Arrest Seven in Alleged Cross-Border Crime and Arms Smuggling Case
The accused were allegedly working for Pakistan-based operative Shahzad Bhatti and his associate, Ajmal Gujjar, police said, adding that the network was involved in procuring and distributing illegal arms, ammunition and narcotics in the region.
Investigators also found that members of the syndicate had allegedly conducted reconnaissance of several locations in Delhi, Ghaziabad and adjoining areas, raising concerns about possible plans to carry out criminal or terror-related activities.
According to police, intelligence inputs received in May indicated that Bhatti and Gujjar were planning major criminal and terror-related activities in Delhi-NCR through local operatives.
Acting on the information, police launched a probe and laid a trap, leading to the arrest of Mohit alias Yogi, a key member of the network.
Police said illegal weapons and digital evidence pointing to his alleged links with Pakistan-based handlers were seized from Yogi's possession.
During interrogation and subsequent investigation, officers uncovered a wider network operating in Delhi-NCR.
The accused allegedly used social media platforms to recruit young people by promising quick money and portraying an attractive criminal lifestyle, before involving them in arms and narcotics trafficking.
According to police, the network received consignments of weapons and narcotics allegedly dropped by drones from Pakistan in Punjab.
These consignments were then transported through a chain of operatives and supplied in Delhi-NCR.
Five pistols, 41 live cartridges, seven mobile phones and a sports utility vehicle (SUV) were seized during the operation.
Police said the operation thwarted several potential criminal and terror-related plots and disrupted an important logistics network allegedly being run by Pakistan-based handlers.
