Calcutta High Court Declines Urgent Hearing Pleas of Aroop Biswas and Sujit Bose

MP, June 9, 2026, Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Monday declined to accord urgent hearings to separate petitions moved by former West Bengal ministers and Trinamool Congress leaders Aroop Biswas and Sujit Bose, directing that both matters be taken up in the normal course of proceedings.

Biswas had approached the court seeking protection from coercive police action and challenging a criminal case registered against him over alleged irregularities surrounding the football event featuring Argentine legend Lionel Messi at Salt Lake Stadium last December.

However, Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya declined to treat the matter as urgent and said it would be heard according to its position in the regular list.

The development came on a day when police summoned Biswas for questioning in connection with allegations linked to ticket distribution and crowd management at the high-profile event.

The programme had witnessed widespread disorder after thousands allegedly gained entry without proper authorisation, leading to overcrowding, security concerns and damage to stadium property.

Organisers later blamed the former minister for the fiasco and the losses incurred.

Meanwhile, Justice Krishna Rao also refused an urgent hearing of a petition filed by former Fire Services Minister Sujit Bose, who is challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in the alleged municipal recruitment scam.

Bose was taken into custody by the central agency in May as part of a money laundering probe stemming from alleged irregularities in civic body appointments.

Seeking judicial intervention, his counsel argued that the arrest was legally unsustainable and pointed out that Bose’s name did not figure in the chargesheet filed in the predicate offence.

The court, however, observed that challenges to arrest orders are ordinarily not considered matters requiring immediate intervention.

Justice Rao directed that the petition be listed in June and heard according to its turn in the roster.
