Zero Tolerance on Illegal Buildings and Factories, Warns West Bengal Government

MP, May 15, 2026, Kolkata : Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Thursday took a tough stand on a range of law-and-order, public health and illegal construction issues, issuing strict directives to the police top brass on matters ranging from noise pollution at religious institutions to curbing animal sacrifice in public places and ensuring stern action against any violation of law and order.

According to Nabanna sources, Adhikari, who chaired a meeting with the Superintendents of Police of all districts, including top brass of the police commissionerates, in the presence of the Commissioner of Kolkata Police, made it clear that no religious place would be allowed to emit sound beyond the prescribed limits.

On illegal construction, he is learnt to have said: “We have taken a zero-tolerance stand on illegal buildings and factories. Those involved in such activities have been urged to refrain from them.”

Police authorities have been directed to strictly enforce existing guidelines on noise pollution control. Religious events and places of worship will be required to adhere to prescribed decibel limits to ensure that the public is not inconvenienced or disturbed.

The Chief Minister also delivered a stern message regarding animal slaughter in public. He reportedly stated that cattle slaughter or animal sacrifice would not be allowed outside designated authorised locations.

Police have been instructed to strictly enforce the guidelines regarding animal slaughter and take strict action in case of any violation.

The police have been directed to increase surveillance on the illegal transportation of animals in vehicles and to take swift action whenever complaints are received.

A notification issued by the Home Department on Wednesday stated that random public animal sacrifice or illegal slaughter would now be treated as a punishable offence.

Officials said allegations of hygiene violations and environmental pollution due to open animal slaughter had repeatedly surfaced in the past, prompting a more proactive administrative approach.

The Chief Minister is scheduled to visit Diamond Harbour on Saturday and will chair a virtual meeting with police officials from various districts across the state to review the overall law and order situation.
