West Bengal Begins Process to Implement Vidyanjali Programme in Government Schools

MP, May 22, 2026, Kolkata :   The Samagra Shiksha Mission under the State School Education department has pulled up its socks for the implementation of the Central Government’s Vidyanjali programme across all government and government-aided schools in West Bengal.

A notification issued by the department has directed all District Inspectors (DI) and District Primary School Council (DPSC) chairpersons to ensure the implementation of the programme at the earliest.

The Vidyanjali initiative is designed to encourage community participation in school education by allowing citizens, former students, retired teachers and other volunteers to contribute to the development of schools.

Under the programme, volunteers can support schools in two major ways, which include providing services such as teaching, yoga training, sports coaching, career guidance sessions, health camps and similar activities, and by donating materials, including benches, fans, computers, sports equipment, books, laboratory instruments and stationery items.

As per the directive, schools will have to register themselves on the Vidyanjali portal using their UDISE+ code. After registration, schools will upload details of their requirements on the platform.

Interested volunteers can then connect with schools directly and extend support based on those needs.

Schools have also been instructed to issue certificates to volunteers after completion of their contribution or service.

In February, Minister of State for Education Jayant Chaudhary had said in the Rajya Sabha that out of over 82,000 schools in West Bengal, only 55 have onboarded the scheme that was launched in September 2021.

“Because the government does not want to implement the scheme, the number of volunteers under the scheme is also poor, as only 2,134 individuals have been onboarded as volunteers from the State of West Bengal,” he had said.

The initiative is being projected as an opportunity for citizens to actively participate in strengthening public education and contribute to the welfare of schools in their local areas.
