West Bengal: 7 killed in rain-related incidents, says Suvendu Adhikari
Suvendu Adhikari said that the state government will provide a compensation of ₹4 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased.
He noted that the BJP government in Bengal will provide a compensation of ₹4 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased.
“Seven deaths were reported due to rain-related incidents, including house collapse, electrocution, and lightning,” Adhilkari said at the state secretariat.
“The state government has announced a compensation of ₹4 lakh each for the families of the seven deceased victims. Compensation will also be provided to the injured. Instructions have already been issued to ensure their treatment is carried out quickly and efficiently,” he added.
Besides this, Adhikari said that the Chief Secretary has been directed to form a committee with experts from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation to examine how large trees in the city can be protected and managed better to prevent such incidents in the future.
Thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rains and gusty winds lashed Kolkata as well as several other districts of south Bengal on Friday afternoon, disrupting normal life and severely affecting flight, metro and train services.
Also, trees were uprooted across multiple regions. Dark clouds had gathered over Kolkata and adjoining areas since morning, amid oppressive humidity. As the afternoon progressed, the sky turned unusually dark and heavy rain began sweeping across several parts of the city, including Salt Lake, Esplanade, Dum Dum, Jadavpur and Baranagar.
Strong winds battered the metropolis for more than an hour, leaving several roads blocked and severely affecting traffic movement.
