MP, May 11, 2026, Kolkata: A fresh spell of turbulent weather is set to sweep across West Bengal this week as a low-pressure system develops over the Bay of Bengal, prompting weather authorities to issue alerts across much of the state.
According to the latest forecast, widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds are likely to affect both North and South Bengal over the next several days. Kolkata and adjoining districts are expected to witness light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms, with wind speeds ranging between 30 and 50 kmph. The city forecast also indicates cloudy skies and intermittent rain through midweek.
The impact is likely to be more intense in several districts of South Bengal, including coastal and low-lying areas, while districts in North Bengal may experience heavy rainfall at isolated places.
Weather officials have reportedly placed as many as 23 districts under varying levels of alert as the system gathers strength over the sea. Meteorologists say favourable wind patterns and abundant moisture inflow from the Bay are creating ideal conditions for thunderstorm activity across the state.
Rainfall activity is expected to continue at least until May 14, with occasional squalls, lightning and localised waterlogging possible in urban pockets. Residents have been advised to remain cautious during thunderstorm hours and avoid open spaces during lightning activity. The changing weather is also expected to bring temporary relief from the prevailing humid conditions across Bengal.
