The spokesperson said, “The President congratulates Prime Minister Modi on this recent, historic, and decisive election victory.”
Desai further described the BJP’s performance in West Bengal as “historic and decisive.”
The BJP, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, secured a sweeping 207 seats, marking a dramatic political shift in the state. The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) was reduced to 80 seats, while other parties including the Congress, Left, and Humayun Kabir’s AJUP together managed only 6 seats.
This marks the first time the BJP is set to form a government in West Bengal.
Following the results, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the victory reflected the trust of the people and the hard work of BJP workers over generations.
He stated: “The lotus blooms in West Bengal! The 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections will be remembered forever. People’s power has prevailed and BJP’s politics of good governance has triumphed. I bow to each and every person of West Bengal.”
He further added that the BJP would work to ensure a government that guarantees opportunity and dignity for all sections of society, emphasizing that the win was built on decades of dedication by party workers.
Among the notable results, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari emerged as a key figure, winning high-profile constituencies including Bhabanipur and Nandigram, defeating Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur by a margin of 15,105 votes.
The election results also ended the 15-year rule of the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal.
BJP State President Samik Bhattacharya confirmed that the oath-taking ceremony of the new government will take place on May 9, 2026.
The date holds cultural significance, coinciding with 25 Baishakh in the Bengali calendar, and marking the 165th birth anniversary of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.
The White House statement also recalled that during a recent phone call, President Trump had expressed admiration for Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, noting India’s fortune in having him as its leader.
With this victory, the BJP has described its win as a mandate for “good governance,” while marking a major political transformation in West Bengal’s electoral history.
