Tensions Rise in Kalimpong Following Assembly Election Outcome
KalimNews | May 6, 2026 | Kalimpong : A tense political situation unfolded at Industrial Park in Kalimpong as a large gathering of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) supporters assembled outside the Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha (BGPM) party office. The group attempted to enter the premises with the intention of removing the party’s flag, but Kalimpong Police had already secured the area, preventing any unauthorized access and maintaining order.
The incident is being seen in the backdrop of the recent West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections. Although BGPM continues to hold administrative control over the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA), Panchayat bodies, and the Kalimpong Municipality, the election results delivered a mandate in favor of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which was supported by GJM. With the BJP and its allies now having both a Member of Parliament and a Member of the Legislative Assembly, their political base appears increasingly encouraged. Observers believe that the developments at Industrial Park are a direct outcome of the shifting political dynamics following the recent MLA elections.
Amid the unfolding situation, GJM leaders have also expressed the view that public property and government buildings should not be used by political parties, emphasizing that such spaces must remain free from partisan occupation.
The site of the standoff carries considerable historical significance. Originally owned by Scottish Church missionaries, it began as a weaving school before evolving into an industrial training center. It later became widely known as the Arts and Crafts institution, producing and selling locally woven cotton textiles. After the missionaries left, the property was handed over to local entrepreneurs, who formed a cooperative society to manage its operations.
By the early 2000s, the institution declined due to financial losses, leading many workers to leave and establish their own small-scale or cottage industries. Despite this, the premises continued to house several offices, including a showroom, an Arts and Crafts office on the upper floor, and even a CPI office within a temporary structure.
The building gained political prominence during 2007–2008 when the newly formed GJM, led by Bimal Gurung, occupied the space. Following the political developments of 2017, when a faction led by Anit Thapa formed GJM II, the same office came under its control and continues to function from there.
During negotiations with the police, GJM supporters demanded that the administration take over the building and return it to its original owners. They also called for the removal of BGPM flags, signboards, and hoardings from the premises. In response, the police took control of the building and surrounding area to maintain peace and prevent further escalation.GJM is of the opinion no public property and government building be allowed to use by the political parties.
Security has also been tightened at another sensitive location—the building housing the AITMC office near the Kalimpong District Library—which is now under police supervision.
A similar incident had earlier occurred in Gorubathan, where tensions were successfully brought under control following intervention by the Panchayat Samity and the police, restoring normalcy in the area.
In response to the situation, the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police of Kalimpong issued a public appeal urging all residents to refrain from political violence and to maintain peace and harmony.
Meanwhile, Bhim Agarwal, Vice Chairman of Kalimpong Municipality, has resigned from his post. His resignation comes amid growing demands for the dissolution of the municipality and the long-pending municipal elections to be conducted.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing restraint, dialogue, and responsible action to ensure stability in the region.
