Samik warns against post-poll unrest in Bengal

MP, May 11, 2026, Kolkata:  A day after the BJP formed its first government in West Bengal under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, state BJP president Samik Bhattacharya issued a stern warning to Trinamool Congress workers and leaders against any attempt to trigger unrest or violence in the state following the change of power.

Bhattacharya reportedly told the media that the BJP government would take strict action against anyone involved in hooliganism or attempts to disturb law and order. “Power has changed hands now. No one will be spared. Anyone indulging in hooliganism will be sent to jail,” he said, while alleging that efforts could be made to create tension in different parts of the state.

At the same time, the BJP leader also appealed to his own party workers to maintain peace and avoid any retaliatory violence in the post-election atmosphere. He said the BJP’s victory should not become an excuse for revenge politics and urged supporters to behave responsibly despite what he described as years of political struggle and attacks on party cadres.

Bhattacharya claimed that the BJP’s rise to power in Bengal was the result of decades of sacrifice by party workers across the country. Referring to the party’s ideological roots, he said workers “from Kashmir to Kanyakumari” had dreamt of forming a government inspired by Syama Prasad Mukherjee in his home state. He also alleged that 321 BJP workers had lost their lives during political clashes in Bengal over the years.

The BJP state president also took a swipe at former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, claiming that her political chapter in Bengal was over. He said no alliance or political understanding would be able to bring her back to power and mocked her future political prospects, saying she was “free to go anywhere.”
