KMC Conducts Demolition Drive Against Alleged Illegal Constructions Across Kolkata
Backed by heavy police deployment and central forces, civic authorities carried out demolition drives against structures allegedly built in violation of sanctioned municipal plans.
Bulldozers were deployed at multiple sites as officials began razing unauthorised portions of the buildings.
In Tiljala’s Ward 66, represented by Trinamool Congress (TMC) councillor Faiyaz Ahmed Khan, son of senior TMC MLA Javed Khan, civic officials arrived early in the morning and started demolishing allegedly illegal sections of multi-storeyed buildings.
A similar operation was carried out on East Kulia Road in the Beliaghata police station area, where a partially constructed building allegedly linked to local TMC leader Raju Naskar was demolished.
KMC officials said a notice had been issued on May 21 directing the owner to produce relevant building documents within 48 hours.
“As no response was received, the demolition squad proceeded with the action,” a civic official said.
Officials said workers initially dismantled portions of the structures manually using hammers and pickaxes before bulldozers were used to bring down larger sections.
Civic authorities alleged that several of the buildings had exceeded approved plans, with some structures rising to five or six storeys without proper sanction.
The crackdown comes in the wake of the recent fire at an allegedly illegal factory in Tiljala that claimed two lives and intensified scrutiny over unauthorised constructions in Kolkata.
In Kasba, demolition work was carried out at a site allegedly linked to arrested land scam accused Biswajit Poddar alias “Sona Pappu”, amid allegations that a five-storey building had been constructed without approval.
Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Minister Agnimitra Paul visited the site and interacted with civic and police officials overseeing the operation.
Paul alleged that illegal constructions had flourished during the previous regime, with the knowledge of civic authorities and political patronage.
She warned that strict action would be taken not only against those responsible for illegal buildings but also against civic officials accused of facilitating such irregularities.
The minister also directed officials to ensure that neighbouring residential buildings were not damaged during the demolition process.
