Himanta Biswa Sarma Set for Second Consecutive Term as Assam Chief Minister; Swearing-In on May 12
Agencies, May 10, 2026, New Delhi : Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to begin his second consecutive term as Chief Minister of Assam after being unanimously elected as the leader of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Legislature Party in the state. The decision marks a renewed mandate for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led alliance following a decisive electoral victory.
The leadership selection was formalized during a meeting attended by Union Minister J. P. Nadda, who, along with Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, served as central observers. According to party officials, as many as eight separate proposals from BJP legislators were placed in support of Sarma’s continuation as chief minister, reflecting strong internal consensus.
All major NDA partners in the state, including the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People's Front (BPF), extended their support to Sarma’s leadership. Following the meeting, NDA leaders are expected to meet the Governor later on Sunday to formally stake a claim to form the new government.
The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for May 12 in Guwahati, where Sarma will officially take oath as Chief Minister for another term. The high-profile event will be held at the Veterinary Field in Khanapara and is expected to witness the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with several Union ministers, chief ministers from multiple states, and representatives from industry.
The NDA’s victory in Assam marks its third consecutive term in power in the state, securing a strong two-thirds majority in the legislative assembly. The BJP alone won 82 seats in the 126-member House, while its allies AGP and BPF secured 10 seats each, reinforcing the alliance’s dominant position in state politics.
The current NDA governance in Assam traces its origin to 2016, when the alliance first came to power under the leadership of then Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. Since then, the BJP-led coalition has maintained its political stronghold in the state, culminating in this renewed mandate.
Ahead of the ceremony, Chief Secretary Ravi Kota confirmed that all departments had been instructed to ensure comprehensive preparations. The administration has prioritized security, coordination, and logistical arrangements to ensure the oath-taking ceremony is conducted smoothly, reflecting its political and administrative significance.
With the new term set to begin, Sarma’s leadership continues to be seen as central to the NDA’s governance strategy in Assam, as the state prepares for another phase of political continuity under the alliance’s rule.
