Blood spills day after verdict: At least 3 killed in post-poll violence

MP, May 6, 2026, Kolkata: Hours after the West Bengal Assembly election results were declared, top BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and state president Samik Bhattacharya, urged people to “give up the culture of violence”. However, the post-result violence that followed quickly overshadowed the party’s electoral victory.

On Tuesday, Bhattacharya reiterated that post-poll violence would not be tolerated and warned that strict disciplinary action, including expulsion, would be taken against anyone found involved.

Despite this strong message from the leadership, incidents of violence were reported from several parts of the state, raising concerns over law and order in the immediate aftermath of the results.

Till the filing of this report, at least three deaths had been reported in West Bengal following the Assembly election outcome, amid allegations of widespread post-poll clashes.

Kolkata Police, in a social media statement on Tuesday, said misleading posts using unrelated images and videos were being circulated as incidents from the city, clarifying that the situation remained under control and action would be taken against rumour-mongers.

However, no updated statement was issued after reports of fatalities emerged.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India directed the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) to ensure zero tolerance towards any post-poll violence.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) alleged attacks on its offices in Tollygunge, Kasba, Baruipur, Panihati, Kamarhati, Baranagar, Howrah, Ruby, Asansol and Berhampore.

In a post on social media, TMC leader Derek O’Brien stated: “In central Kolkata, near New Market. With police permission. As part of victory celebrations a bulldozer was brought in to demolish meat shops. CAPF standing around.”
