By 7:45 PM, voter turnout in Phase II reached an impressive 91.66%, following an even higher participation of 93.19% in Phase I. When combined, the overall turnout for the two phases stands at a remarkable 92.47%, surpassing all previous records. This historic figure exceeds the earlier highest turnout of 84.72%, recorded during the 2011 Assembly elections, marking a significant milestone in the state’s electoral journey.

The gender-wise participation in Phase II further highlights the inclusive nature of the democratic process. Female voters led with 92.28%, followed by male voters at 91.07%, while participation among third-gender voters stood at 91.28%, bringing the total to 91.66%. These figures, though provisional, indicate strong engagement across all sections of society. The data, compiled through the ECINET platform by Presiding Officers, is still being updated, with reports from 5,343 polling stations yet to be incorporated. Final figures will include service voters and postal ballots and will be officially published later.

The Election Commission ensured stringent monitoring throughout the process. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Dr. S.S. Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi, closely supervised polling through live webcasting, which was successfully implemented across 100% of polling stations in Phase II. This technological integration enabled real-time observation and strengthened transparency.

Across both phases, the scale of the electoral exercise has been massive. A total electorate of approximately 6.81 crore voters participated across 294 Assembly Constituencies in 24 districts. The election involved 2,926 candidates, supported by over 85,000 polling stations, more than 4.26 lakh polling personnel, and over 3.35 lakh polling agents. The efficiency of the process was further enhanced by updated guidelines requiring Presiding Officers to upload polling data before leaving stations, significantly reducing delays in reporting.

Several innovative and voter-friendly initiatives were introduced to improve accessibility and convenience. These included clearly visible color photographs of candidates on EVM ballot units, Mobile Deposit Facilities (MDF), redesigned Voter Information Slips for better readability, and a cap of 1,200 voters per polling station to reduce congestion. Special provisions were also made to ensure inclusivity, such as wheelchair availability, volunteer assistance, and transport facilities for persons with disabilities, enabling wider participation.

Historical data reveals a steady rise in voter turnout over the decades, from just over 40% in the early 1950s to crossing the 90% mark in 2026. Notably, female voter participation has not only matched but surpassed male turnout in recent years, reflecting a progressive shift in electoral engagement. In 2026, the combined turnout stands at 91.74% for male voters and an even higher 93.24% for female voters, reinforcing the growing role of women in shaping the democratic process.

The people of West Bengal have once again demonstrated their unwavering commitment to democracy. This record-breaking participation is not merely a statistic but a powerful testament to civic awareness, inclusivity, and the enduring strength of the electoral system.
