West Bengal Government Directs Officials to Visit Vulnerable Poll Areas Ahead of Assembly Elections
In a letter, Chief Secretary Dushyant Nariala asked District Magistrates (DMs), Commissioners of Police (CPs) and Superintendents of Police (SPs) to identify localities that witnessed incidents of violence or intimidation during previous elections.
"Such places should be visited within the next 2–3 days by DMs/DEOs along with CPs/SPs and District Force Coordinators," the letter said, adding that the visits should be covered by the press to enhance public confidence.
An official said the objective is to reassure voters and ensure a peaceful atmosphere in identified pockets.
All district authorities have been instructed to submit a compliance report on the joint visits by 5 pm on April 16.
The communication also asked district officials to prepare a comprehensive communication plan to ensure connectivity at every polling station through mobile, satellite, wireless and other appropriate means.
"Every polling premise must be brought under a reliable communication network to ensure seamless coordination during the elections," the order stated.
Elections to the 294-member assembly of West Bengal will be held in two phases, on April 23 and 29, and the votes will be counted on May 4.
