RSP lawmaker Aryal likely to become Nepal's Parliament Speaker

PTI, Apr 03, 2026, Kathmandu : Nepal's ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker D P Aryal is likely to be elected as the Speaker of the House of Representatives as he was the only candidate to file nomination papers for the post on Friday.

The election for the post of Speaker will take place on Sunday.

Aryal, who is also the Vice President of the RSP, was elected MP from Kathmandu Constituency 9 in the general elections held last month.

On Thursday, RSP President Rabi Lamichhane proposed Aryal's name for the post of Speaker at the parliamentary party meeting, which was unanimously approved.

Aryal was the only candidate to file the nomination papers for the post of Speaker on Friday, said Nepali Congress leader Arjun Narsingh K C, who chaired the first meeting of the HoR on Thursday.

As per the regulations, if only one nomination is registered, the presiding official declares the candidate elected unopposed.

The formal announcement will take place during the next meeting of the lower house on Sunday.

The RSP, formed in 2022, enjoys a comfortable majority in the lower house as it secured 182 out of a total of 275 seats in last month's elections.
