Ladakh finally gets distinct Aadhaar identity, ‘J&K’ tag removed

 After years of mismatch post-2019 reorganisation, UIDAI updates records centrally using PIN codes; residents spared individual corrections

Nearly seven years after Ladakh was carved out as a separate Union Territory from the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir in 2019, residents have finally secured a distinct identity in Aadhaar records, with the ‘Jammu and Kashmir’ label now replaced by ‘Ladakh’.

The long-pending correction was implemented following the intervention of Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, an official spokesperson said.

Despite the creation of the Union Territory, Aadhaar records continued to reflect ‘Jammu and Kashmir’ in the ‘State’ field, leading to widespread inconvenience. Residents faced difficulties in using Aadhaar as a valid identity and address proof, as the details did not align with Ladakh’s post-reorganisation status.

Taking note of the prolonged issue, the administration took up the matter with the Unique Identification Authority of India. The correction has now been carried out successfully, ensuring that Ladakh is properly represented in Aadhaar-linked databases.

In a significant relief to residents, authorities devised a centralised mechanism for the update. Instead of requiring individuals to visit Aadhaar centres, records were corrected based on Ladakh-specific PIN codes, verified in coordination with the Department of Posts and shared with UIDAI.

Officials said the move would eliminate procedural hurdles and enable smoother access to services. Residents can now download their updated e-Aadhaar online, while those seeking a PVC card can apply through the UIDAI portal by paying a nominal fee.

The development is expected to improve ease of living and ensure accurate representation of Ladakh’s identity across official records.
