Journalist Assaulted in Imphal Sparks Strong Condemnation from AMWJU and EGM
According to reports, the incident occurred on April 16, 2026, when ISCOM News journalist Nongmeikakpam Ibotombi was attacked by CRPF personnel while he was on his way home after covering a torch rally in Singjamei. As he reached Singjamei Chingamakha Irom Leirak, a group of CRPF personnel stationed in the area reportedly confronted and assaulted him without asking any questions or seeking clarification about his identity.
Despite informing them that he was a member of the press, he was not given an opportunity to verify his credentials or show his identification card. The personnel allegedly dragged both him and his vehicle onto the road during the altercation. Although he was wearing a helmet at the time, he suffered injuries, and his eyeglasses were damaged in the course of the assault, which reportedly continued at an undisclosed location.
Later, after his identity as a journalist was confirmed, the same personnel reportedly expressed regret over the incident and escorted him back to his residence.
In response, a joint meeting of AMWJU and EGM was convened, where the incident was strongly denounced. The organizations emphasized that such actions against journalists are unacceptable and deeply concerning, particularly given that media professionals play a crucial role in informing the public about important developments and issues affecting society.
The meeting also highlighted that this is not an isolated occurrence. A previous incident involving the assault of two journalists by CRPF personnel at Kwakeithel was recalled, raising further concerns about the repeated targeting of media personnel.
Calling for accountability, both organizations urged that appropriate and prompt action be taken against those responsible for the incident. They stressed that repeated acts of aggression against journalists must come to an immediate end to ensure a safe and free working environment for the press.
