Grand Cultural Welcome and Major Development Initiatives Mark Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Landmark Two Days Visit to Sikkim

KalimNews, April 28, 2026, Gangtok: Prime Minister Narendra Modi received an extraordinary and heartfelt welcome in Sikkim, as Gangtok turned into a vibrant hub of celebration, culture, and unity during his two-day official visit. The visit holds historic importance as the Prime Minister is attending the grand closing ceremony of Sikkim’s 50 years of statehood celebrations while also unveiling and inaugurating major development projects worth over ₹4,000 crore.

Dressed in a traditional Lepcha coat symbolising respect for local heritage, the Prime Minister arrived at Libing Helipad where he was warmly received by Governor Om Prakash Mathur and Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang. From there, he proceeded to Deorali, where a massive gathering of enthusiastic citizens created a lively and colourful atmosphere, waving flags and cheering as his convoy moved forward.

A grand roadshow from Ganju Lama Dwar to Lok Bhawan became the centerpiece of the welcome, with thousands lining both sides of the streets for hours. The entire route was adorned with decorative gates, cultural displays, and symbolic installations, while traditional music like the Naumati Baaja echoed through the hills, enhancing the festive spirit. At multiple welcome points, diverse communities showcased Sikkim’s rich cultural heritage through vibrant performances and greetings.

At Lal Bazar, members of the Sikkim Marwari Samaj and the Muslim community greeted the Prime Minister with chants and enthusiasm. At Hospital Dara, the Tamang community presented traditional dances, joined by Self-Help Groups and local residents. At Zero Point, the Newar Guthi and SHGs performed the iconic Lakhey dance, symbolising the victory of good over evil. At Tashi Namgyal Academy Gate, representatives from Lachen-Mangan, Dzongu, and Kabi-Tingda constituencies welcomed him, while retired Sikkim Armed Police personnel and officials from the Tashiling Secretariat marked their presence. The Gurung community added to the celebrations with traditional folk songs accompanied by the Khaijari drum.

Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang and State BJP President D R Thapa accompanied the Prime Minister throughout the roadshow. The Chief Minister described the welcome as a deeply emotional and overwhelming expression of love and respect from the people, noting that citizens from all sections of society came together in large numbers to make the occasion memorable and historic.

The Prime Minister acknowledged the people by waving repeatedly as his convoy passed through densely packed streets, with loud cheers and applause following him across the city. Residents, students, families, and supporters waited patiently for hours, reflecting the significance of his presence.

Beyond the celebrations, the visit is marked by a series of key programmes and developmental initiatives. On April 28 at Paljor Stadium, the Prime Minister will attend and address the grand closing ceremony of Sikkim’s golden jubilee of statehood. During this ceremony, he will inaugurate, dedicate, and lay the foundation stones for multiple projects exceeding ₹4,000 crore, covering sectors such as infrastructure, road connectivity, rural and urban development, healthcare facilities, educational institutions, power and energy, environmental conservation, tourism promotion, and agricultural advancement.

These initiatives are aimed at accelerating Sikkim’s growth trajectory while strengthening sustainable development and improving the quality of life for its citizens. The Prime Minister is also scheduled to deliver a keynote address highlighting the state’s achievements over the past five decades and outlining a vision for its future.

As part of his itinerary, the Prime Minister will visit the Orchidarium in Gangtok, where the ‘Swarnajayanti Maitri Manjari’ Park has been developed as a world-class Orchid Experience Centre. This initiative commemorates the golden jubilee while showcasing Sikkim’s unique ecological and floral diversity to the world.

It is noteworthy that although the Prime Minister had been expected to attend the inauguration ceremony of the year-long golden jubilee celebrations earlier, adverse weather conditions had prevented his arrival at that time. He had then addressed the people virtually from Siliguri in neighbouring West Bengal.

The city remained under tight security arrangements throughout the visit, yet the festival-like atmosphere remained undiminished. People from across Sikkim gathered in unity, transforming the occasion into a historic and memorable celebration.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit has not only highlighted major development initiatives but has also beautifully reflected Sikkim’s cultural richness, unity, and aspirations, making it a proud and defining moment in the state’s journey.
