EC orders action over Mamata Banerjee’s ‘obscene meme’

MP, 28 April 2026, Kolkata:  The Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed police to take appropriate action after an objectionable meme targeting Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee went viral on social media.

According to sources, a separate controversy also erupted on Saturday over BJP and TMC campaigning in Chakraberia under the Bhowanipore Assembly Constituency. It was alleged that BJP workers had set up microphones close to Banerjee’s rally venue, causing disruptions during her speech. She reportedly left the site midway, visibly upset by the noise.

Soon after the incident, an obscene meme linked to the episode circulated widely online. Once the matter came to the notice of the Election Commission, police were directed to initiate immediate action. Sources indicated that a case under the Information Technology Act is likely to be registered shortly.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission has reportedly issued fresh guidelines regarding webcasting at polling booths. Presiding officers have been instructed to dismantle webcasting cameras only after the completion of the election process, while polling teams have been directed to submit VVPAT machines to strongrooms within the stipulated timeframe.
