Counterfeit Currency Seized Ahead of Polling in Siliguri
Acting on an intelligence tip-off, a joint team comprising plainclothes officers from the Matigara Police Station and the Special Operations Group (SOG) launched a targeted surveillance operation.
The suspect was first spotted at a prominent shopping mall in the Matigara area. Security forces trailed him discreetly before cornering and apprehending him near Himachal Bihar.
Searching the suspect, officers seized a stash of high-quality counterfeit notes. There were a total of 252 notes of denomination of Rs 200, with a total face value of Rs 50,400.
One person, a resident of Jorethang, Sikkim, was arrested. Preliminary interrogation has revealed a cross-border smuggling link that had long been a concern for regional security.
The accused was produced before the Siliguri Sub-Divisional Court on Wednesday. The police have requested for transit remand or custody for his questioning.
