BGPM president Anit Thapa sought to reassure cadres, stating, “Symbol holds emotional value, but the party’s ideology and commitment to the people remain foremost. A new election symbol will be announced shortly.”
The party had already announced candidates for Kalimpong, Darjeeling, and Kurseong constituencies following the election schedule announcement on March 15 and has been campaigning using the candle symbol. Thapa confirmed that candidates Ruden Sada Lepcha (Kalimpong) and Amar Lama (Kurseong) will file their nomination papers on April 1, while Darjeeling candidate Vijay Kumar Rai is set to submit nominations on April 2.
Thapa described the elections as a critical moment for ensuring peace and development in the hills and breaking away from what he termed “politics of falsehood.” He emphasised that BGPM’s campaign is rooted in truth and facts rather than emotion and provocation.
Meanwhile, the Indian Gorkha Janshakti Front (IGJF) began its campaign on Tuesday after announcing candidates on March 29. Ajoy Edwards, party Chief Coordinator and Darjeeling candidate, toured the town urging voters to support change in governance and improvement in civic services, healthcare, roads, and education.
The Darjeeling, Kurseong, and Kalimpong constituencies are scheduled to go to polls on April 23, with the last date for nominations set for April 6.
