Amit Shah addresses Darjeeling rally virtually amid bad weather, reiterates Gorkha assurances

KalimNews, Kalimpong, April 15, 2026: Union Home Minister Amit Shah could not attend the “Vijay Sankalp Sabha” at Gorkha Stadium in Lebong, Darjeeling, on Wednesday due to inclement weather and heavy fog. Despite all preparations being completed to welcome him, Shah cancelled his visit and instead addressed the people of Darjeeling virtually from Malda, with his speech broadcast at the venue.

Apologising for his absence, Shah assured supporters that he would soon visit the hills. He said, “My next meeting will be held on 21 April in Sukna, and I will certainly come there to meet all of you.”

Stating that he would keep his speech brief, Shah added, “This time, as I have travelled across the whole of Bengal, today I am addressing you from Malda.”

Addressing the people of the hills, he expressed confidence in his party’s electoral prospects. “People of Darjeeling, it is certain that this time a Bharatiya Janata Party government is going to be formed in Bengal. With the formation of a BJP government, infiltration in Bengal will stop, lawlessness will end, and the rule of syndicates and mafias will come to an end.”

He further alleged that the existing system had targeted Gorkhas unfairly. “The police raj that has been established by filing thousands of false cases against thousands of Gorkhas in the hills of Darjeeling will also come to an end. At the same time, the Gorkha issue will definitely be resolved.”

Highlighting his past efforts, Shah said, “As the Union Home Minister of India, I have made several efforts to resolve the Gorkha issue. In the past one and a half years, I called three meetings, but Mamata didi or any of her representatives did not come to Delhi.”

He added, “I then decided that if Didi does not want to come, I myself will come to Bengal. An interlocutor was appointed to speak to all of you. He tried to speak with Mamata ji and her government as well, but they did not even give him time, because they do not want justice and rights for the patriotic Gorkha brothers living in the hills of Darjeeling.”

Reassuring the people, Shah stated, “But you do not worry. After the government is formed on 5 May, it will be the priority of the Bharatiya Janata Party government in Bengal to resolve the Gorkha issue within the constitutional framework.”

He also made a key promise regarding pending cases. “I make one more promise today. The thousands of cases filed against our Gorkha brothers and sisters will all be withdrawn once the BJP government is formed, and justice will be ensured for everyone.”

Criticising the current political approach, he said, “In a democracy, the new tradition started by Mamata Banerjee and the communists of suppressing those who protest by filing cases against them will be ended by the Bharatiya Janata Party.”

Reiterating his assurance in Hindi, Shah said, “Gorkha samasya ka samadhan bhi nishchit rup se ayega.”

He further added, “Mai jab aglisabha me 21 April ko aunga tab Pahad ke liye Vikas ka Roadmap Gorkha Bhaiyo behno ke liye anek prakar ki ghosnaye mai wahi karunga.” (When I come to the next meeting on 21 April, I will present a detailed development roadmap for the hills and make several announcements for our Gorkha brothers and sisters)

Until then, I apologise that I cannot come to the Darjeeling hills today to meet you. But when I come, I will speak in detail.”

Emphasising priorities, Shah said, “Today, I only want to say that after the formation of the government, resolving the Gorkha issue and the problems of Darjeeling will be our priority, and all the political cases filed against Gorkha activists will be withdrawn.”

Concluding his address, Shah urged voters to support BJP candidates. “Elect our three candidates — Shri Noman Rai, Shri Sunam Lama and Bharat Kumar Chhetri — with a huge majority and form your own government. To form your own government in Bengal, press the button on the lotus symbol.”

He also underlined that after forming the government, resolving the issues of the Gorkhas and Darjeeling within the constitutional framework would be a top priority.
