West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose Resigns Ahead of Assembly Elections

KalimNews, March 5, 2026, Kolkata : In a significant and unexpected political development, C. V. Ananda Bose, the Governor of West Bengal, resigned from his post on Thursday after serving around three and a half years in office. The resignation comes just ahead of the upcoming State Assembly elections, triggering intense political discussion and speculation regarding the circumstances behind the decision.

Officials from Lok Bhavan confirmed that Bose submitted his resignation in New Delhi. After stepping down, he briefly told Press Trust of India (PTI), "I have spent enough time at governor's office."

At present, the exact reasons for his resignation have not been officially disclosed. However, the timing of the development—just before the Assembly polls—has led to widespread political reactions and speculation.

Among the first leaders to react was Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, who expressed shock and concern over the sudden development in a post on X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook.

"I am shocked and deeply concerned by the sudden news of the resignation of Shri C.V. Ananda Bose, the Governor of West Bengal. The reasons behind his resignation are not known to me at this moment. However, given the prevailing circumstances, I would not be surprised if the Governor has been subjected to some pressure from the Union Home Minister to serve certain political interests on the eve of the forthcoming State Assembly elections."

The Chief Minister also revealed that Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, informed her that R. N. Ravi, the current Governor of Tamil Nadu, would be appointed as the new Governor of West Bengal.

Banerjee criticized the process, stating that the established constitutional convention of consultation with the state government had not been followed.

"Union Home Minister just informed me that Shri R.N. Ravi is being appointed as Governor of West Bengal. He never consulted with me as per the established convention in this regard. Such actions undermine the spirit of the Constitution of India and strike at the very foundation of our federal structure. The Centre must respect the principles of cooperative federalism and refrain from taking unilateral decisions that erode democratic conventions and the dignity of States."

Her remarks have intensified the debate over the Centre–State relationship and constitutional conventions surrounding gubernatorial appointments.

A seasoned administrator, C. V. Ananda Bose was sworn in as the Governor of West Bengal on November 23, 2022. The oath of office was administered by the then Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, Prakash Shrivastava.

Bose had been appointed Governor on November 17, 2022, replacing La Ganesan.

He is a retired 1977-batch IAS officer from the Kerala cadre. During his distinguished bureaucratic career, he held several senior administrative positions before retiring in 2011. One of his notable assignments included serving as the administrator of the National Museum in Kolkata.

Beyond his administrative career, Bose is widely known for his scholarly and literary work. He is a recipient of the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowship and holds the distinction of being the first-ever Fellow of the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie.

According to Lok Bhavan, Kolkata, Bose has produced around 350 publications, including 70 books written in nine languages. His writings span a broad spectrum of literary forms, including novels, short stories, poems, and essays.

Throughout his career, Bose has also represented India in several important international scientific and policy forums. He represented the country at the European Council for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva and the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) Organization in France.

He also served as the Chairman of the Atomic Energy Education Society, playing an important role in promoting education and awareness in nuclear science.

Additionally, Bose headed the prestigious committee constituted by the Supreme Court of India to oversee the treasures of the historic Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple.

The resignation of Governor C. V. Ananda Bose, especially at a time when West Bengal is preparing for crucial Assembly elections, has added a new dimension to the political climate in the state. While the official reasons remain undisclosed, the development has already sparked political debate and renewed discussions about constitutional conventions, federal balance, and the role of Governors in India's democratic framework.
