KalimNews, Kalimpong, March 18: Following the tragic death of a newborn at Kalimpong District Hospital on March 9, and the intense public scrutiny that followed, the hospital administration has initiated a series of corrective measures to restore accountability and improve its functioning.

The incident sparked widespread concern among local residents and members of civil society. In response, a crucial meeting was convened in the chamber of the Hospital Superintendent. The meeting was attended by members of the victim’s family, representatives of the NGO Network, civil society members, and hospital authorities. Apart from discussing the circumstances surrounding the newborn’s death, the meeting also aimed to ensure that justice is delivered to the grieving family.
Addressing newspersons after the meeting on Wednesday, NGO Network coordinator Nereus Mukhia described the discussion as “significant and constructive.” He stated that several important decisions were collectively agreed upon to address both the immediate concerns of the bereaved family and the broader issues within the hospital administration.
One of the key assurances given during the meeting was that doctors would now be required to strictly adhere to their full duty hours, ensuring uninterrupted and accountable medical services. It was also decided that the mother of the child would receive complete medical treatment and would only be discharged once her health has fully stabilized.
Special emphasis was placed on strengthening Outpatient Department (OPD) services. Doctors have been instructed to maintain a full-time presence in the OPD to prevent negligence and ensure timely care for patients.
Regarding compensation, it was informed that the hospital authorities would formally communicate with higher officials in the Health Department to initiate the process of providing compensation to the bereaved family. Although no immediate compensation has been disbursed, officials have assured that proactive steps will be taken in this regard.
Mukhia expressed hope that these measures could bring much-needed improvements in the hospital’s functioning if implemented sincerely.
In a significant administrative move, an urgent order was issued to restructure the hospital’s leadership. This decision comes in light of reported irregularities, alleged insubordination, and violations of directives issued by the Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH), Dr. Supriya Mitra.
Notably, the meeting was held in the absence of the hospital Superintendent and Dr. Hajra, the doctor accused of having a role in the newborn’s death. The hospital authorities have also assured that all staff members will perform their duties punctually and with sincerity.
Meanwhile, an impartial investigation and inquiry into the newborn’s death are still ongoing. Reports have also emerged regarding the physical ailment and disability of the accused doctor. Further details on this matter are expected, and the information has already been communicated to the concerned board.
As part of the administrative overhaul, the current Superintendent, Dr. Saikat Bose, has been removed from his position. Dr. Prasenjit Biswas has been appointed as the Superintendent of the hospital.
According to the post-mortem report, the baby was stillborn. However, this finding appears to contradict the statement of the doctor who was present during the delivery, adding another layer of complexity and controversy to the case.
The situation continues to be closely monitored, with the public and authorities alike awaiting the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
