Heavy Rainfall in Sikkim: Avalanche Alert Issued, No Incidents Reported So Far
Officials confirmed that as of this morning, there have been no reports of any avalanche-related incidents or casualties, even as the region continues to receive intermittent rainfall.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Sikkim recorded 31.7 mm of rainfall between Friday and Saturday, nearly 456% higher than the normal 5.7 mm. Other districts also saw unusually high precipitation of which Mangan had 36.9 mm.
Sikkim has been recording heavy rainfall since Friday, with today’s figures showing Gangtok receiving 8 mm of rain, and temperatures ranging from a high of 10.2°C to a low of 7.5°C.
Seasonal rainfall from March 1 to 21 stood at 162.1 mm, almost double the normal 82.1 mm. Gangtok reported a 225% rise, Pakyong 298%, and Namchi 188%, while Soreng remained below normal at 25 mm, 20% less than usual.
The Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority reiterated that avalanches are likely in areas above 3,500 metres. “The alert comes amid changing weather conditions in the region, which can increase the risk of snow instability and trigger avalanches,” the advisory said.
Authorities have urged tourists, trekkers, and residents to avoid high-altitude travel unless absolutely necessary and remain vigilant in snow-covered areas, especially steep slopes.
Heavy snowfall has affected travel to key tourist spots. The road from Gangtok to Tsomgo Lake and Nathula Pass remains closed, with vehicles turned back at checkposts due to slippery surfaces, low visibility, and ongoing snow accumulation.
Officials from the Roads and Bridges Department said snow clearance and restoration will begin once conditions improve, but terrain instability continues to pose risks for both travellers and maintenance operations.
The state government has asked the public to stay updated through official channels and coordinate with local authorities before travelling in North or East Sikkim. Gangtok continues to receive intermittent heavy rainfall, heightening concerns over landslides and road safety.
While the alert remains in place, officials confirmed no avalanche incidents have occurred since the warning was issued, reflecting effective monitoring and precautionary measures.
