CEC Gyanesh Kumar Faces Protests in West Bengal

PTI, Kolkata, March 10, 2026 : Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar was met with protests during his visit to Dakshineswar Kali Temple on Tuesday morning, where groups raised “go back” slogans and displayed black flags.

This follows similar demonstrations during his visit to Kalighat Temple on Monday and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport on Sunday night. Despite these protests, Kumar continued with his official schedule in the state.

During his visit to Belur Math in Howrah, he reaffirmed the Election Commission’s commitment to free, fair, and violence-free elections in West Bengal. Kumar emphasized that the EC aims to ensure voters can exercise their franchise in a safe and festive environment, free from intimidation.

The CEC’s current trip includes meetings with political parties and officials to review poll preparedness ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
