KalimNews, March 7, 2026, Kathmandu: Balendra Shah, popularly known as Balen, has emerged as one of the most prominent figures in Nepal’s ongoing general elections, strengthening his position as a leading prime ministerial contender of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP). His dramatic victory has become one of the most widely discussed developments of the election, drawing attention across Nepal as vote counting continues in several constituencies and the political landscape rapidly evolves.
One of the most dramatic and widely discussed outcomes of the election has come from Jhapa–5, where Balendra Shah secured a landslide victory over K. P. Sharma Oli, the chair of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist) (CPN-UML).
Shah received 68,348 votes, while Oli managed 18,734 votes, giving Shah a decisive margin of 49,614 votes in a constituency widely regarded as the epicentre of this election. The result has drawn national attention particularly because the Rastriya Swatantra Party had already announced Shah as its candidate for prime minister. In the 2022 parliamentary election, Oli had defeated Khagendra Adhikari of the Nepali Congress by a margin of 28,576 votes, making this year’s outcome even more significant.Mahabir Pun
Before entering national politics, Balendra Shah served as the Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City from May 2022 until January 2026, when he resigned to contest the national elections. Born in Naradevi, Kathmandu, into a Madhesi family, he is the son of the late Ram Narayan Shah, a distinguished Ayurvedic physician.
