KalimNews, March 15, 2026, Calcutta : The Election Commission of India has  announced the polling schedule for Assembly elections in West Bengal, Keralam (formerly Kerala), Tamil Nadu, Assam, and the Union Territory of Puducherry. These elections will take place in April, with results for all regions to be declared on May 4.

Single-Phase Polling in Three States and Puducherry

Polling in Keralam, Assam, and Puducherry will be conducted in a single phase on April 9. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu will go to the polls in a single phase on April 23.

Keralam, which was recently rechristened as Keralam, will elect representatives for its 140-member Legislative Assembly, with votes to be counted on May 4.

Similarly, the Assam Legislative Assembly elections will be held on April 9, and the counting of votes is also scheduled for May 4.

Two-Phase Polling in West Bengal

The high-voltage Assembly election in West Bengal will be conducted in two phases, with polling scheduled for April 23 and April 29. The counting of votes will take place on May 4, along with the results of elections in the other states and the Union Territory.Nationwide Democratic Exercise

The Election Commission announced that counting of votes for all 834 constituencies across Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Assam, West Bengal and Puducherry will take place on the same day—May 4.

This large-scale democratic exercise will involve millions of voters across India and will be conducted under strict security arrangements and administrative supervision.

By-Elections in Other States

Alongside the Assembly polls, the Election Commission has also announced by-elections for eight constituencies spread across Goa, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tripura.

  • By-elections in Gujarat and Maharashtra will take place on April 23.

  • The remaining by-elections will be held on April 9.

The results of these by-polls will also be declared on May 4, the same day as the Assembly election results.

Ensuring Voter Participation and Accessibility

The Election Commission has emphasized its commitment to making polling stations accessible and voter-friendly. Necessary arrangements will be made to ensure drinking water, sanitation, ramps, wheelchairs, help desks, clear signages, and adequate lighting at every polling booth.

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar reiterated the Commission’s commitment to transparent elections and encouraged citizens to actively participate in the democratic process.

With approximately 17.4 crore voters expected to take part, the elections are set to become one of the largest democratic exercises in the world, reflecting the diversity and unity of India’s electoral tradition.
