Unlocking Karang Island’s Potential Through a Sustainable Green Village Tourism Model

Asem Bhakta Singh, KalimNews, Feb 22, 2026, Imphal: Inspired by Vietnam’s ecotourism initiatives, Asem Bhakta Singh has envisioned a similar model for Manipur’s Karang Island. A recent All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) Vietnam tour, supported by the DIPR and the Tourism Department, showcased the power of community-led tourism.

Our Vietnam Experience

The delegation visited Con Thoi Son Island in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta, known for its fruit orchards, local honey production, and traditional village life. The island’s tranquil atmosphere, delicious local food, and warm hospitality left a lasting impression. The team enjoyed a delightful froud (a local breakfast dish), sipped honey tea, and relished a delicious lunch amidst nature.

They also explored Hanoi Bay, strolled through Hanoi Old Quarter’s charming streets, and experienced the vibrant energy of Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). Its bustling streets, War Remnants Museum, and mouth-watering food were unforgettable. The Cu Chi Tunnels offered a poignant reminder of Vietnam’s history. The group was fascinated by the local handloom and handicrafts, particularly the intricate embroidery and woodcarvings.

Applying Vietnam’s Lessons to Karang Island

The proposal highlights the following focus areas:

  • Eco-friendly infrastructure such as solar power and bio-toilets.

  • Community engagement through local guides and homestays.

  • Cultural preservation, including traditional huts, handicrafts, and music.

  • Promotion of local cuisine, including fresh fish stalls and traditional dishes.

  • Encouragement of handloom and handicrafts by showcasing local artisans and selling local products.

Green Village Model Project

The proposed Green Village model project on Karang Island will focus on sustainable ecotourism practices, including:

  • Eco-friendly accommodations using local materials.

  • Organic farming and community gardens.

  • Waste management and recycling systems.

  • Renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power.

  • Eco-conscious tourism activities like birdwatching and nature walks.

Package Tour Proposal

The suggested package tour includes:

  • A 1.5-hour trip to Karang Island with welcome tea.

  • A visit to the ancient Karang Island Temple.

  • Exploration of local handloom and handicrafts stalls.

  • A visit to Loktak fresh fish stalls.

  • A traditional lunch with live music in a large hut.

  • Boat services every hour until 2 pm (six package services).

Supported By

The initiative seeks support from:

  • Tourism Department

  • Environment Department

  • Art and Culture Department

  • Handloom and Handicrafts Department

  • Fisheries Department

  • Loktak Development Authority (LDA)

  • Forests Department

  • DIPR

Vietnam was described as an incredible experience, with its food, people, and scenery leaving a deep impact on the visiting journalists. Con Thoi Son Island and the Mekong Delta were highlighted as must-visit destinations, along with traditional Vietnamese dishes.

Karang Island, the proposal emphasises, has similar potential. With proper planning, sustainable practices, and community participation, it can emerge as a model for green tourism while preserving local culture and supporting artisans.
