Sikkim Chief Minister’s Office Condemns Alleged Racial Abuse Incident in Delhi
“It is deeply unfortunate and profoundly disturbing to witness a video circulating on social media regarding a recent incident in Malviya Nagar, New Delhi, where three young women from Arunachal Pradesh faced racial abuse following a minor dispute during an air-conditioner installation at their rented accommodation on February 20, 2026,” it says.
“According to multiple reports, what began as a trivial disagreement escalated into deeply offensive and derogatory remarks based on the women’s northeastern identity, including statements questioning their character and dignity. Such conduct is reprehensible, wholly unacceptable, and a direct affront to the constitutional principles of equality, dignity, and unity that define our nation ‘India’.”
“This incident once again serves as a grave reminder that racial prejudice against people from the northeast continues to persist in parts of the country. We condemn in the strongest possible terms any form of discrimination, harassment, or verbal abuse directed at individuals on the basis of their ethnicity, appearance, or place of origin.”
“It has also been reported that, during the altercation, demeaning remarks were made in reference to ministers and Chief Ministers of northeastern states, including mention of Sikkim. Such statements are disrespectful not only to constitutional offices but also to the dignity of the leadership and people of all northeastern states. These comments reflect a deeply troubling mindset that perpetuates discrimination and prejudice against citizens from the northeast.”
“We call upon the concerned authorities to ensure a swift, impartial, and transparent investigation into the matter and to take firm action under the law against those responsible. Justice must be delivered without delay, and a clear message must be sent that racial discrimination and gender-based abuse will not be tolerated anywhere in India.”
“We also urge citizens across the country to reflect upon their conduct and actively reject prejudice in all its forms. The safety, dignity, and rights of students and working professionals from the northeast must be safeguarded at all times. The Government of Sikkim and the people of Sikkim stand in solidarity with the aggrieved women and reaffirm our strong commitment to equality, mutual respect, and national unity. Such a prejudiced mindset not only undermines these values but also disturbs the integrity and inclusive character of our national capital as well. An insult to the dignity of one Indian is an insult to the dignity of all.”
