Sevoke Hit-and-Run Accused Arrested by Siliguri Police

Millennium Post, Feb 24, 2026, Siliguri: Police have arrested Debangshu Paul Chowdhury in connection with the fatal hit-and-run incident on Sevoke Road. The accused, a resident of the Bidhan Market area, was apprehended after CCTV footage helped investigators identify the vehicle involved.

The incident occurred around 12:30 am on Wednesday when a youth and a woman were walking from Bhaktinagar towards Panitanki More. A speeding four-wheeler hit them, dragging them nearly 20–30 feet before crashing into an e-rickshaw and fleeing the spot. The youth, Shankar Chettry, died, while the woman remains critically injured in hospital.

On Monday morning, police recovered the vehicle from a city car showroom and later ar
rested the owner, reportedly the son of a petrol pump owner, from his workplace. During interrogation, he admitted that he had been driving the car at the time. Police are probing whether he was under the influence of alcohol and investigating other possible factors.

Agencies: Siliguri Police have arrested Debangshu Paul Chowdhury, the driver allegedly involved in a tragic hit-and-run incident that claimed the life of 22-year-old Shankar Chhetri and left a young woman fighting for her life. Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.

The fateful night began like any other, but around 12:30 a.m. on Thursday, 19th February 2026, Sevoke Road near the Panitanki Outpost became the scene of a devastating accident. A speeding car reportedly slammed into Shankar Chhetri and a young woman, who were walking along the roadside. The impact was violent, flinging both pedestrians off the road.

Tragically, Shankar did not survive. The young woman sustained critical injuries and remains hospitalized.

Police responded promptly, rushing the injured to a nearby hospital. Despite medical efforts, Shankar succumbed to his injuries. His sister, Mannu Chhetri, shared that Shankar had been returning from work with Blinkit and was the primary support for their elderly parents. "This wasn’t just an accident; it could have been intentional. We demand justice," she said.

Authorities initially faced challenges identifying the vehicle and driver, combing through multiple CCTV locations across Siliguri. Social media circulation of the footage amplified public outrage and pressure on the police to act.

Following an intensive investigation, Siliguri Police traced the car in a motor garage to Debangshu Paul Chowdhury, who has now been taken into custody. Investigators are probing the exact circumstances of the collision and whether negligence or intentional wrongdoing was involved.

This incident recalls a similar tragedy last year on Sevoke Road, where a hit-and-run by a vehicle left one person dead and another injured. In that case, the vehicle was abandoned by three occupants who were later arrested.

The community and victim’s family continue to demand swift justice for Shankar, highlighting the urgent need for road safety enforcement and accountability.
