More than 20 Manipur BJP MLAs Leave for Delhi to Meet Central Leadership

PTI, February 01, 2026, Imphal :  Over 20 BJP MLAs from Manipur, along with the state unit president, left for New Delhi on Sunday to attend a meeting with the party’s central leadership, amid speculation over the formation of a new government in the state.

Manipur BJP president Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi told reporters at Imphal airport, “All NDA legislators have been called. We are hoping and believing that a popular government will be formed.”

Former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh said, “Since all MLAs of the NDA partners are being invited for a meeting, I expect a positive outcome. Earlier, there was a meeting of all BJP MLAs. The President’s rule term is due to end on February 12. Let’s hope for a positive response.”

He added, “Government is a continuing process. I tried my best to change the landscape in Manipur. There has been a lot of changes both in the hills and the valley.”

Lamsang constituency MLA S. Rajen Singh noted that while government formation is possible, the leader would be chosen by the central leadership after assessing the situation in the state. The meeting is likely to be held on Monday evening. Other MLAs, including H. Dingo and L. Susindro, said they were informed only to reach Delhi, with the agenda yet to be announced.

National Peoples’ Party (NPP) state unit president Lorho S. Pfoze and NPP Naga MLA J. Pamei are also expected to attend the meeting in Delhi.

Manipur has witnessed severe ethnic violence since May 2023 between Meitei and Kuki-Zo groups, leaving over 260 dead and thousands homeless. President’s rule was imposed in the state on February 13, 2025, after N. Biren Singh resigned as Chief Minister. The state assembly, with tenure till 2027, remains under suspended animation.

The BJP holds 37 seats in the 60-member Manipur Assembly. NDA partners NPP and Naga Peoples’ Front (NPF) have six and five MLAs respectively.
