China Urges US to Release Maduro and Wife 'At Once', India Expresses Grave Concern

EOI, NEW DELHI, JAN 4, 2025: In a strong reaction to the US attack on Venezuela and the capture of the country's President and his wife, China called on the United States to release Maduro and his wife "at once" and "resolve issues through dialogue and negotiation."

A Chinese Foreign Ministry statement expressed grave concern over the US forcibly seizing Maduro and his wife and taking them out of the country. The move is in clear violation of international law, basic norms in international relations, and the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, it said. The fall of the Maduro government and his capture by the US is regarded as a major setback for Beijing, as it shared close strategic ties with Venezuela from the days of Maduro's predecessor, Hugo Chavez.

Meanwhile, in New Delhi, in its first reaction to the American action in Caracas, India expressed "deep concern" over the developments. It also called for a peaceful resolution of the situation through dialogue to ensure stability in the region and reaffirmed its support for the well-being of the people of that country.
