Historic Aviation Milestone: Gelephu International Airport Launches First International Flight
Bhutan’s Southern Gateway Opens to Regional Connectivity, Boosting Tourism, Trade, and Investment
Rajesh Sharma, KalimNews, Gelephu, Bhutan, December 8, 2025 : A new chapter in Bhutan’s aviation history was written on 8 December 2025 as Gelephu International Airport witnessed its very first international flight on the Gelephu–Kolkata–Gelephu route. Operated by Drukair, the inaugural service officially establishes Gelephu as Bhutan’s newest international aviation gateway, strengthening the southern border’s strategic role as a rising regional hub.
The historic launch was marked by a traditional water cannon salute upon arrival in Kolkata, celebrating a major step in enhancing connectivity and positioning the newly commissioned airport as a key facilitator for travellers, investors, and businesses alike. The introduction of international operations from Gelephu is anticipated to deepen Bhutan’s links with its neighbours, unlocking new pathways for tourism, logistics, trade, and services, while supporting the broader vision of the fast-developing Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC).
This milestone follows the airport’s receipt of its Aerodrome Certificate from the Bhutan Civil Aviation Authority in September 2023, confirming that the facility complies with international safety and operational standards for commercial aviation.
The service between Gelephu and Kolkata would operate twice a week, on Mondays and Fridays. The regular services would start from December 12. The flight, to be operated by an ATR 42-600 aircraft, has 32 economy class and eight business class seats. The flight will take off from Gelephu at 12.10 pm, arrive in Kolkata at 1.10 pm, depart for Gelephu at 1.50 pm, and arrive in Gelephu at 3.20 pm.
Drukair will operate two weekly commercial flights on Mondays and Fridays. The schedule is as follows:
-
KB210 – GLU → CCU | Departure: 12:10 | Arrival: 13:10
-
KB211 – CCU → GLU | Departure: 13:50 | Arrival: 15:20
These regular services are expected to provide smoother and more reliable access between Bhutan and one of India’s major regional gateways, enhancing travel options for both business and leisure visitors.
During the inaugural flight, GMC Governor Dasho Dr Lotay Tshering highlighted the wider significance of the launch for the city’s long-term aspirations. “With the launch of international flights, Gelephu will connect Bhutan more seamlessly with our neighbours and partners. This is a symbol of our readiness to engage the region through mindful, sustainable, and future-focused development,” he said.
Echoing this sentiment, Drukair CEO Tandi Wangchuk emphasised the transformative potential of the new route. “The launch of international flights from Gelephu is more than a route expansion; it is the opening of Bhutan’s future gateway. With direct links to Kolkata, Gelephu will accelerate its transformation into a global destination for mindful living, innovation, and sustainable development,” he said.
Nestled along Bhutan’s southern border, the Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) is being developed under an innovative governance framework, committed to holistic growth across eight priority sectors: spirituality; health and wellness; education and knowledge; agri-tech and forestry; green energy and technologies; finance and digital assets; aviation and logistics; and tourism.
This milestone follows the airport’s receipt of its Aerodrome Certificate from the Bhutan Civil Aviation Authority in September 2023, confirming that the facility complies with international safety and operational standards for commercial aviation.
The airport’s first international departure signifies not just an operational achievement but a powerful signal of Bhutan’s forward-looking vision for Gelephu and the nation.
The airport has also received global recognition, having been named Future Project of the Year at the World Architecture Festival 2025, a prestigious accolade celebrating visionary design and sustainable planning. The award highlighted Gelephu International Airport as a model for infrastructure aligned with Bhutan’s mindful development ethos.
Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay inaugurated the historic launch in Gelephu on the morning of 8 December 2025. A delegation led by the Prime Minister, GMC Governor, and senior government and Drukair officials participated in the inaugural flight to Kolkata and returned the same afternoon, demonstrating the airport’s readiness for full international operations.
Drukair CEO Tandi Wangchuk reaffirmed the airline’s commitment: “Henceforth, Drukair will operate a twice-weekly flight between Gelephu and Kolkata. We hope this service will enhance the visibility of Gelephu Mindfulness City and stimulate further development in the region.”
GMC Governor Dr Lotay Tshering expressed pride in the achievement and optimism for future growth. “From today onwards, we hope to see more aircraft landing in different countries and flights from across the region arriving at Gelephu, day and night. This is a proud and joyful moment for every Bhutanese, at home and abroad,” he said, calling for continued support and prayers for the success of this vital project.
The Department of Tourism welcomed the launch, describing the new service as a vital step in improving accessibility and unlocking economic opportunities for local communities in southern Bhutan. Director of DoT Damcho Rinzin emphasised that Gelephu’s strategic location as an entry point and home to the forthcoming GMC will advance regional development, provide convenient travel for visitors, and support Bhutan’s high-value, low-volume tourism policy.
According to Drukair, Economy Class one-way fares for the Gelephu–Kolkata route start at Nu 5,500, with round-trip fares reaching up to Nu 9,900. Business and international-class fares can range up to USD 390, providing flexible options for a range of travellers.
The inauguration of Gelephu International Airport as Bhutan’s newest international gateway marks a historic milestone in the nation’s aviation sector. By diversifying entry points, strengthening regional connectivity, and supporting tourism, logistics, and trade, the airport is poised to accelerate the emergence of Gelephu Mindfulness City as a vibrant hub for sustainable development, innovation, and mindful living. The launch represents not only an operational achievement but a significant stride towards Bhutan’s vision for regional integration, economic growth, and global engagement.
