Two British Nationals Arrested for Illegal Entry into India via Nepal

PTI, BAHRAICH (UP), NOV 15, 2025 :  Two British nationals, a man and a woman, both doctors, were arrested on Saturday for allegedly entering India illegally from Nepal at the Rupaideha border in Bahraich district, officials said.

According to the officials, the duo was detained by security forces during an intensified checking process in the wake of the blast near Delhi's Red Fort. The personnel of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and Uttar Pradesh Police intercepted the pair around 10 a.m. as part of routine border verification.

Ganga Singh Udawat, Commandant of the SSB's 42nd Battalion, confirmed the detentions, stating that the foreigners had crossed into India from Nepal and, upon document scrutiny, it was found that both were British nationals without a valid Indian visa. The detained individuals could not provide any satisfactory explanation for their entry into India, according to Udawat.

The man was identified as Dr. Hassan Amman Saleem, 35, originally from Pakistan, now residing in Manchester, United Kingdom. The woman was identified as Dr. Sumitra Shakeel Olivia, 61, originally from Udupi, Karnataka, with her current address in Gloucester, UK.

Both individuals claimed to be medical professionals who had traveled to Nepalganj, Nepal, at the invitation of a local hospital. However, they failed to offer a convincing explanation for attempting to enter India without the necessary travel documentation.
