"Shape of Momo"/ Chhora Jastai: Steals the Spotlight at Kolkata International Film Festival

KalimNews, Kalimpong, Nov 7, 2025 :  Shape of Momo, the debut feature film by Tribeny Rai, is rapidly gaining global attention and its next major stop is the prestigious Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF). Officially selected for the Indian Languages Film Competition, the film will make its highly anticipated Indian premiere on November 10, 2025, further solidifying its place among the rising stars of international cinema.

Having already garnered accolades at prominent international festivals like the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) 2025—where it won the Taipei Film Commission Award and Songwon Vision Award—Shape of Momo is making waves globally. It was also featured at the San Sebastián International Film Festival in Spain.

The film's selection for KIFF marks a major milestone, bringing it to Indian audiences after its international success. Moreover, Shape of Momo has earned nominations for the Silver Peacock Award for Best Debut Feature Film and the Best Debut Director Award at the upcoming 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa, to be held from November 20-28, 2025.

The film tells the poignant story of Bishnu, a woman who returns to her Himalayan village after leaving her job in the city. Struggling with the weight of societal expectations and family pressures, she embarks on a journey of self-discovery. In the face of generational struggles and the constraints of a patriarchal community, Bishnu seeks personal freedom and autonomy. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Sikkim’s mountainous landscape, Shape of Momo explores universal themes of identity, freedom, and the conflict between tradition and personal desires. Through her journey, Bishnu must reconcile her responsibilities to her family with her own need for independence, highlighting the struggles women face in rural and patriarchal societies.

Shape of Momo has already captured international attention. After its successful debut at the Busan International Film Festival, the film has been a part of high-profile markets, including Cannes and Hong Kong. The screening at KIFF will mark its first major showcase in India, bringing the power of Tribeny Rai’s storytelling to local audiences.

“I am truly honored to present Shape of Momo in Kolkata, a city with such a rich cinematic tradition. I hope the film resonates with Indian audiences as it has with viewers around the world,” said Rai, who expressed her excitement about showcasing her work at this renowned festival.

The lead role of Bishnu is portrayed by Gaumaya Gurung, whose powerful performance has been widely praised. The film also stars Rahul Nawach Mukhia, Pashupati Rai, Shyama Shree Sherpa, and Janaki Kadayat. The film's emotional depth and portrayal of complex familial dynamics have been lauded by critics.

The film's production team played a key role in realizing Rai's vision. Shape of Momo was produced by Dalley Khorsani Productions (Sikkim), in collaboration with Kathkala Films (Delhi) and Aizoa Pictures (South Korea). Executive producer Mike Goodridge, known for his work on Triangle of Sadness, helped guide the project’s international reach. Cinematography was handled by Archana Ghangrekar, whose stunning visuals bring the Sikkimese landscape to life, while Ankita Purkayastha crafted a sound design that complements the film's emotional tone. The score, composed by Mikhail Marak, adds another layer to the storytelling.

Rai, who also co-wrote the film with Kislay Kislay, has crafted a narrative that challenges societal norms and explores the personal struggles of women seeking independence. The film was co-edited by Anil Aalayam, with production design by Uttam Mondal. Costume design was handled by Janaki Kadayat and Ankita Purkayastha.

Shape of Momo has already been well-received by international audiences and critics. It premiered at the 2025 Busan International Film Festival, winning two prestigious awards, and was also shown at the San Sebastián International Film Festival. Rai’s previous works, including her short films Memory of a Heart and Yathawat, have earned recognition at festivals worldwide.

As the film continues its festival run, Shape of Momo is set to screen at the Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) from November 26 to December 7, 2025, where Gaumaya Gurung has been nominated for Best Performance in the Asian Feature Film Competition. With its selection for KIFF and continued international acclaim, the film is poised to become a global cinematic sensation.

The selection of Shape of Momo for KIFF highlights the growing recognition of Sikkimese cinema on the world stage. Tribeny Rai, a passionate advocate for women’s voices in film, has already earned significant praise for her work. The Chief Minister of Sikkim, Shri Prem Singh Tamang-Golay, lauded Rai’s contribution to Indian and international cinema, calling her achievements a source of immense pride for the state.

“Her success at international festivals is a reflection of the growing influence of Sikkimese filmmakers,” said Tamang-Golay. “We are thrilled to see Shape of Momo making its mark at such prestigious festivals.”

As Shape of Momo continues to make waves globally, Rai is already looking ahead to her next project, which will continue to explore the complexities of human nature. “Filmmaking is my way of understanding life, and I look forward to exploring deeper themes in my future work,” she shared.

For now, all eyes are on Shape of Momo, as it continues its remarkable journey, with its Indian premiere at KIFF marking another significant chapter in its success story.
