Examining Bangladesh's Request to Extradite Sheikh Hasina

PTI, NEW DELHI, NOV 26, 2025: India on Wednesday said it is examining a request from Bangladesh to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and that it remains committed to ensuring the best interests of the people of Bangladesh.

Hasina, 78, was sentenced to death in absentia by a special tribunal in Dhaka last week for "crimes against humanity" over her government's brutal crackdown on student-led protests last year. The Awami League leader has been living in India since fleeing Bangladesh on August 5, 2024, in the face of massive protests.

"The request is being examined as part of ongoing judicial and internal legal processes," External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said. "We remain committed to the best interests of the people of Bangladesh, including peace, democracy, inclusion, and stability in that country, and will continue to engage constructively in this regard with all stakeholders," he added.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh on Wednesday said India had given “no reply” to its earlier request for the extradition of Sheikh Hasina. However, Dhaka now expects a response from New Delhi, noting that "the situation is different now" as the judicial process has been completed and the former Premier has been convicted.

The interim government led by Muhammad Yunus had sent an "official letter" to India last week, requesting the extradition of 78-year-old Hasina after she was sentenced to death by a special tribunal on November 17 for committing "crimes against humanity". Foreign Affairs Adviser M. Touhid Hossain told reporters that the government is awaiting India's reply to its latest request for extradition.
