Country Has Right to Bring Back Offenders Evading Law: Apex Court

PTI, NEW DELHI, NOV 26, 2025: The Supreme Court on Wednesday asserted that a country has the right to bring back offenders who are evading the law, as it refused to entertain a plea from a man seeking to withdraw his extradition request made to the United Arab Emirates.

The petitioner, Vijay Murlidhar Udhwani, is wanted in India for allegedly being involved in organised illegal activities, including bootlegging. According to authorities, 153 cases have been registered against Udhwani, who travelled to Dubai in July 2022. A red corner notice was also issued against him.

A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta was hearing Udhwani's plea, challenging an order of the Gujarat High Court. The court's ruling reaffirms a country's right to seek the return of offenders who flee to foreign jurisdictions to escape legal action.
