Calcutta High Court Directs WBCSSC to Decide on Teacher’s Plea for Full Marks for Past Experience

MP, Kolkata, Nov 6, 2025:  The Calcutta High Court has directed the West Bengal Central School Service Commission (WBCSSC) to take a decision on whether a teacher should be awarded full marks for her prior teaching experience in the ongoing recruitment process.

Justice Amrita Sinha, who heard the plea, instructed the Commission to resolve the matter “at the earliest, but positively by November 26,” following an appeal filed by teacher Priyanka Shaw. Shaw approached the court, requesting that her representation be considered before the interview stage begins, as the recruitment rules allocate 10 marks for teaching experience — two marks for each year of service.

Shaw, who was appointed in 2022 through the 2016 State Level Selection Test (SLST), lost her job earlier this year after the Supreme Court annulled all appointments made through the 2016 panel. She claims to be a victim of “illegal rank-jumping,” which delayed her appointment. As a result, Shaw argues that she should not be penalized by being denied marks for the years of experience she had accumulated during that period.

Shaw’s counsel referred to an August 8 order from a division bench that stated the delay in issuing her appointment letter was not her fault. On the other hand, the WBCSSC's lawyer contended that work experience cannot be awarded notionally, arguing that Shaw’s actual service began only in 2022.
