9 Climbers, Including 2 Local Guides, Killed in Separate Avalanches in Nepal

PTI, KATHMANDU, NOV 4, 2025 :  At least nine climbers, including two Nepalese guides, have tragically lost their lives in two separate avalanches in Nepal, officials confirmed on Tuesday. The first incident occurred on Monday morning at around 10 a.m. when seven climbers were buried under an avalanche near Mt. Yalung Ri (6,920 meters) in the Gaurishanker Rural Municipality while attempting to scale the peak.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Gyan Kumar Mahato stated that a joint rescue mission had been mobilized to retrieve the bodies of the climbers. The deceased climbers include two Nepali citizens, two Italians—Paolo Cocco and Marco Di Marcello—along with one Canadian, one French, and one German national. In addition, five other climbers, including three Nepali and two French nationals, sustained injuries and were airlifted to hospitals in Kathmandu for treatment. Four more climbers, who had minor injuries, were also rescued from the site.

In a separate incident, two Italian climbers, Stefano Farronato and Alessandro Caputo, were found dead inside their tent at Camp I of Mt. Panbari (6,887 meters) in the Manaslu region. The two had been missing since October 28 due to heavy snowfall. Their bodies were recovered on Tuesday from an altitude of 5,242 meters. Another Italian climber, Velter Paralion, who was stranded with them, was rescued on Sunday.

The Nepal Tourism Board issued a heartfelt condolence message following the tragic loss of life. "We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives in the avalanche. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families and friends of the seven victims in Yalung Ri mountain," the message read.

This series of tragic events highlights the extreme risks associated with high-altitude climbing in Nepal, a country famous for its towering peaks, including Mt. Everest, which attracts mountaineers from around the world.
